The story behind the art

The White Peacock and The Egret in the Rain come from two very different worlds — 18th-century Europe and early 20th-century Japan — yet they share the same sense of quiet elegance. Both works reflect how artists used simplicity and restraint to express beauty.

In The White Peacock, the soft white and beige tones mirror the fascination of European artists with rare and graceful birds, often painted as symbols of purity and refinement. More than a study of nature, it was a reflection of taste and serenity.

Nearly two centuries later, Ohara Koson’s The Egret in the Rain (1925–1936) captures that same calm through Japanese woodblock printing. His egret stands motionless in falling rain, surrounded by muted greys and delicate lines.

Seen together, these two works connect East and West through a shared appreciation of stillness, harmony, and understated grace.
