The story behind the art

Painted in 1920, California Landscape shows how William Wendt saw the land he loved most — the rolling hills of Southern California. Born in Germany, Wendt moved to the United States as a young man and became one of California’s most celebrated landscape painters. He often worked outdoors, capturing how light and color changed through the day.

In this painting, the soft greens and golden tones reflect the calm beauty of the countryside. Wendt wasn’t trying to show a grand view, but a feeling — the quiet balance between earth and sky. His brushstrokes move gently across the canvas, as if carried by the same breeze that shaped the hills a century ago.
