The story behind the art

Created in 1902 by Italian artist Leonetto Cappiello, Champagne De Rochegré is an early example of his revolutionary approach to poster design. Cappiello is widely regarded as the father of modern advertising posters, known for moving away from crowded illustrations toward bold, simplified images with strong visual impact.

For this poster, Cappiello focused on immediate recognition rather than detailed storytelling. The elegant female figure, shown enjoying a glass of champagne against a flat, warm background, was designed to be instantly memorable from a distance. The contrast between the dark silhouette and the bright yellow backdrop draws the eye directly to the subject and the product name.

Rather than depicting a realistic scene, the artwork emphasizes mood, sophistication, and clarity. This intentional simplicity made the poster highly effective at the time and continues to give it a timeless, graphic quality. Today, it works as a confident statement piece that brings character, contrast, and a sense of classic French style into an interior.
