The story behind the art

Painted between 1680 and 1700 by Alida Withoos, The Collector’s Nandina is a refined example of Dutch botanical art at its height. Withoos belonged to a prominent family of painters and became known for her precise, almost luminous depictions of plants and flowers. At a time when botany and art were deeply intertwined, she brought a uniquely elegant, feminine sensibility to a field dominated by men.

In this work, the red berries and soft pink leaves of the nandina plant are rendered with both accuracy and grace. The composition feels balanced and deliberate, revealing the artist’s fascination with natural order and quiet beauty. It reflects a world where curiosity, science, and art met on the same page — turning a simple study into something timeless and full of life.
