The story behind the art

Created between 1925 and 1936 by Ohara Koson, The Egret in the Rain embodies the quiet poetry of Japanese woodblock printing in the early 20th century. Koson was a master of kacho-ga — bird-and-flower prints — where nature’s smallest moments were captured with grace and restraint.

In this work, a solitary egret stands still as fine rain falls around it. The delicate lines and muted grey tones express calm rather than motion, inviting the viewer to pause in the same stillness. It’s a study in simplicity and balance. Hallmarks of Koson’s art, where emotion is conveyed not through color or drama, but through silence and space.
