The story behind the art

Created between 1909 and 1910 by Japanese artist Kamisaka Sekka, White Phoenix (Hakuho) reflects his role as a key figure in bridging traditional Japanese art and modern design. Sekka was known for simplifying forms and focusing on clarity and decorative balance rather than narrative detail.

For this work, Sekka chose the phoenix. A symbolic creature often associated with renewal and harmony. Not really to tell a story, but to explore movement and composition. The bird is shown in a single, flowing motion, with long feathers extending across the surface. The restrained color palette and open background were intentional, allowing space and form to guide the viewer’s eye rather than detail or realism.

The result is an image that feels light and timeless. Rather than demanding attention, it brings calm structure and visual elegance to a space, making it well suited for interiors that value balance, simplicity, and thoughtful design.
